Northern Italy: A Family Journey
Published by: Jerrod Pickering

We recently had the opportunity to go on a two-week adventure in Northern Italy. This trip was extra special as we celebrated our daughter Addison’s high school graduation by exploring Italy with close friends. Unlike our usual guided tours or cruises, this was a fully self-planned journey, giving us the freedom to discover and experience all Northern Italy has to offer on our own.

Kicking Off the Adventure in Paris

Our journey began with a flight into Paris, where we spent a whirlwind day. Though our time was limited, we made sure to visit the Eiffel Tower. Our guide made the historical details captivating, and even though one day isn’t enough for Paris, catching a glimpse of this iconic landmark was unforgettable. Having dinner at a sidewalk café in the shadow of the Notre Dame Cathedral was the perfect end to the day.

Immersing Ourselves in Rome

After Paris, we flew to Rome via EasyJet. This was our first major stop in Italy, and we stayed in the lively Campo de’ Fiori area. Italy’s culinary scene truly impressed us from the start—each meal felt like a full experience. Even casual lunches consisted of multiple courses, and we tried Amaro, a digestive drink, to help after the rich meals.

Rome’s historical monuments were awe-inspiring. The grandeur of the Colosseum and the beauty of the Trevi Fountain left a lasting impression. We also visited Vatican City, where highlights included the Sistine Chapel’s famous ceiling and Raphael’s “The School of Athens.”

Relaxing in Verona

After the hustle and bustle of Rome, we took the train to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. Staying at a cozy bed and breakfast at a vineyard just outside the city was a refreshing change. Verona’s quieter pace, combined with its romantic streets, made it a perfect retreat.

A standout moment was visiting Juliet’s balcony, which brought the Shakespearean love story to life. The entire setting was charming, and walking the cobblestone streets felt like stepping back in time.

The Enchantment of Venice

Our next stop was Venice, which looked like it was straight out of a painting. The canals, bridges, and narrow streets were even more enchanting in person. We took a gondola ride, explored the Grand Canal, and shopped for beautiful Venetian glass.

We also visited the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Square. The palace’s ornate interiors and art transported us to a different era, while St. Mark’s Square, with its vibrant atmosphere, was the perfect place to unwind with a coffee and soak in the surroundings.

Exploring the Charm of Cinque Terre

Our trip also took us to the breathtaking Cinque Terre, where we visited the villages of Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazza. Manarola’s colorful homes perched on cliffs made for stunning views. Corniglia, situated on a hilltop, offered sweeping vistas of the coastline. Vernazza, with its beautiful harbor and lively main square, quickly became one of our favorites. The peaceful, scenic beauty of Cinque Terre made this part of our journey unforgettable.

Florence: A City of Art and History

Our final stop was Florence, a city brimming with artistic treasures. We climbed the 463 steps of the Duomo, which rewarded us with an incredible view of the city. Florence’s rich artistic heritage continued to amaze us as we explored its museums.

We visited the Medici Chapel, an often-overlooked gem, where Michelangelo’s sculptures and intricate marble work were highlights. The Uffizi Museum was another must-see, where masterpieces like Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera” left us in awe.

No trip to Florence would be complete without seeing Michelangelo’s David. Standing in front of the colossal statue, we marveled at the incredible detail and craftsmanship that made it a true symbol of the Renaissance.

A Culinary Adventure in Italy

A huge part of our journey through Italy was the food. Italians are serious about using fresh, high-quality ingredients and present their meals with pride. Each meal was a celebration of flavors, from the pasta dishes in Rome to the legendary pizzas in Naples and the seafood in Venice.

Florence’s signature Florentine steak, paired with a local Tuscan wine, was a highlight of our culinary experience. Each region had its own specialties, and the attention to detail in every dish was something we’ll never forget.

Reflections on Our Italian Journey

Each city we visited offered a different window into Italy’s deep history and vibrant culture. From the awe-inspiring ruins of Rome to the peaceful vineyards of Verona, the timeless beauty of Venice, and the artistic splendor of Florence, this trip was full of unforgettable moments. Exploring the picturesque villages of Cinque Terre added a new dimension to our adventure.

Traveling through Italy with family and friends gave us memories we’ll cherish for a lifetime. If you’re considering a trip to Italy or simply daydreaming about one, we hope our experiences inspire you to pack your bags and explore this beautiful country.
